A lonely rock rises above the surface of the sea. Mononaftis is a coastal landmark of Heraklion coastal zone. A diving site, accessible both from land and by sea, it is a meeting point for divers of all levels.
The dive starts from the nave, at a depth of 6 meters. The rocky bottom, decorated with black sponges and sea urchins of various sizes, extends in all directions and depths. A small clump, a small prairie of seagrass has grown on the rock, in spite of the weather. Openings in rocks are home to colourful sponges and various species of fish.
In the shady parts of the reefs, crusts of bryozoans, colonies of pseudo corals, as well as rose algae, create microscopic seascapes of dark and semi-dark caves. Deeper, monoliths host groupers of various sizes.
At a safe distance, they listen to the diver’s desire and, depending on intuition, will remain motionless or silently retreat to waters inhospitable to the average diver.
On the way back, walls and cliffs with beautiful decorations keep us alert while we pass through small narrow tunnels that, although dark to our eyes, once the light of the torch falls, a colourful palette emerges! The visibility is very good and depending on the level of divers, there are routes for everyone.
