Description

General:

The Fara underwater cave is located on the SW side of the rock island near the Fara and Tarti beaches. In general, the waters here are shallow, with the main feature being the intense geological formations. The cave is found at 18m as a recess of vertical walls and after penetrating 20-25 meters, it ends in a larger and almost round room with a minimum depth of 12 meters, a maximum of 18 meters and a diameter of approximately 15-20 meters. The side walls of the entrance present a rich biome, with the main characteristic being the colorful sponges. Around the islet the diving depths are from 5-30 meters. The cave is of great biological and geomorphological interest. Recommended for divers of at least Open Water Diver level. Access is possible by boat from Gera, Charamida and Plomari.

Details:

It takes about 20 minutes by speedboat from Charamida to Fara. Depending on the direction of the wind there are 2 possible points (East and West) for anchoring the boat with a shallow plateau, helping the smooth descent of scuba divers.

After the initial adaptation to the divers’ buoyancy has been achieved, the descent continues to be smooth up to 18 meters. At 18 meters depth, the relatively narrow entrance of the cave stands out and as we swim towards its interior, it becomes wider.

Due to the limited entrance of light artificial lighting is necessary. After the adaptation time, we can see on the vertical sides of the cave brightly colored sponges (red, yellow, orange) and the underwater life is impressive, dominated by sponges, bryozoans, ascidians and small soft corals.

As we move inside the main hall of the cave it becomes wider and shallower, up to 12 meters. The feel, the scenery and that unique and intense shade of blue are unimaginable.

At 100 bars at the latest, we have to start the exit from the cave, from where we will continue the underwater course counterclockwise in order to see more fish (saddled sea bream, white sea bream, groupers, bogue fish, parrot fish, damsel fish, moray eel). Close to 50 bar we continue the return to the boat at a depth of about 5 meters.
