General:
The diving route of Feggameni Reef is located near the islet of Agios Georgios off the coast of Petra Lesvos. This location combines an impressive underwater scenery with large rocks rising from the bottom, with rich underwater life. Many times we see big fish here. Diving starts at 5 meters with a maximum depth of about 40 meters, but we can enjoy the site from shallower waters as well.
Details:
It only takes 5 minutes by speedboat from the port of Petra to the reef. The mooring is situated at the most fitting point for secure and comfortable descent, in the shallower part of the reef.
The underwater scenery is really impressive right from the start, comprised by robust vertical, volcanic, geological formations. From the first minutes of underwater navigation, we encounter fish shoals (saddled breams, goldlines, picarels etc.).
At about one third of the route there are two wonderful, vertical geological formations surrounded by an abundance of microorganisms. Then to the left of the reef, while it deepens (20-30 meters), we have the rocks to our right side and is very likely to run into groupers in deeper parts.
We proceed clockwise, as we follow the morphology of the reef, where we find its end and the deepest point (25-40 meters). Here we may come across cardinal fishes, colorful sponges, nudibranchs and lobsters, between the rocks. Of particular interest is a meadow with small peacock worms, which close simultaneously sensing the slightest movement over them.
The return begins on the other side of the reef by gradually ascending. To the open sea at the left we may run into shoals of snappers and barracudas.
The last part of the dive is shallower (5-10 meters) where rocks of red color dominate. Αfter the safety stop at 5 meters we emerge to the surface.
